The Portland State University (PSU) Speech & Hearing Clinic offers free in-person and virtual Zoom aphasia support groups. Each meet 1x per week. Meetings are treatment and conversation-focused. Graduate student clinicians lead and are supervised by Dr. Manaswita Dutta, a speech-language pathologist and PSU Professor. Practice and improve language skills in a group setting. Plus, learn and use functional strategies to enhance communication.

Pacific University Clinics in Hillsboro and Portland offer both in-person and Zoom based 1:1 speech therapy services for adults with neurogenic communication disorders. They accept federal Medicare and Care Oregon. An income dependent scale is used for out-of-pocket payments.

They also offer counseling and therapy services for various mental health needs.

The Pacific EarClinic offers hearing screenings and full assessments if needed. It is located at PSU's Speech & Hearing Department and run by Pacific University. Service fees vary and insurance is accepted (not a full list):

  • Blue Cross Blue Shield

  • Anthem

Aphasia can have emotional, psychological, and social impacts. Family, partners, and friends may also feel challenged by sudden changes associated with aphasia. Counselors with a background in clinical rehabilitation and marriage, couple, and family counseling offer services to address the complex experience of living with aphasia. This clinic, operated by the Counselor Education Department, provides low-cost individual, relationship, and family counseling with supervised graduate students. Download and print the brochure

 

Sessions are in-person or virtual and by appointment only. Cost is $15 each visit, with sliding scale options upon request. Weekly day and evening appointments are available. Call the clinic Monday-Thursday 10am-6pm to schedule appointments.

Westside Aphasia Support Group

Susan Ginley, MS, CCC-SLP and retired PSU faculty, leads a long-standing aphasia support group. Your family and friends are welcomed to join. The group meets virtually via Zoom every 1st and 3rd Monday of each month from 3pm-5pm. Email Susan to join!​

Based in Portland, OR, this group serves stroke and brain injury survivors and their families with group meetings and community events. Many workers and volunteers have themselves sustained various types of brain injuries. There are also opportunities to become a volunteer if interested.

Sarah Bellum's Bakery is located at Multnomah Village in SW Portland. The bakery supports adults with acquired brain injury, including people with aphasia, to return to work and life by baking delicious, hand-crafted cupcakes. Understand your options for long-term care with information on eligibility guidelines, benefits, and services. The Oregon Independent Choices Program offers qualified Oregon Medicaid recipients monthly cash payments to select their own care providers and potentially hire family or friends as paid caregivers. Download a brochure for the program here. The goal of this program is to "prevent the premature or unnecessary institutionalization of disabled or elderly individuals," so individuals must live at home. Assistance for veterans is available. Call the Aging and Disability and Resource Connection of Oregon for help.
